Winter Feeding of Birds and Birding at the Hikers’ Info Centre Sataseitti
There is a lot to see at and around the Hikers’ Info Centre Sataseitti also in winter time, even though the busiest hiking season is over, and the Hikers' Info Centre is normally closed. You can watch the birds from near the great trail map in the courtyard. Moreover, you can study the feeders and their positioning which prevents squirrel access. They are well constructed specimens worth to copy. That is how you should build and position your feeders at home.
Winter feeding of birds will be done, just like last year, by the forestry school. Researchers and students will together catch some birds with nets and will ring them in order to find out which bird species come to the feeder as well as to follow up occurrence of bird individuals already ringed. Birds may, however, be more glad about the usual hikers, skiers and bird watchers who do prefer watching to touching.
Birding is certainly a nice activity option, and the songbirds presence and their sounds form a natural part of the vivid silence of the forest. You can round up a nice walk with some easy and rewarding bird watching. Well, last winter and spring proved special species occurrences as well as a richer than average bird species range at the feeder attract special tourists. One of the most amazing phenomena was how the casual occurrence of a locally rather rare species, the Nuthatch (Sitta europaea) started to attract folks here from all over the Pori Region. On February 12th, Mr. Ari Rantamäki managed to catch one with his net during research count birding, and news started to spread fast. I kept on running into Nuthatch seekers. Even through March, I still was asked questions about nuthatch observations by the enthusiasts who also keep a birding blog. Special tourism? Kind of.
In addition to cross-country skiing, watching birds is a pleasant winter activity available around the Hikers’ Info Centre Sataseitti. In your spare time, a lot of you may find pleasure in watching tiny songbirds and wicked squirrels at the feeders near our cozy red cottage. Those of you who will visit to our courtyard as to do some birding, please be kind to the birds at the feeder, for they have only short daylight times for feeding. Let them feed undisturbed, keep some distance, that is. It is not reasonable to expect you will catch a glimpse of a rare species already on your first visit, even if verified records prove, it had occurred here. You will most likely see common species first, such as the Willow Tit (Parus montana) and the Great Tit (Parus major). They tolerate human presence rather well. If you are rather interested in seeing rarities, then you will have to be prepared to work for the observations, and you will have to follow up birds actively, say, around Hikers’ Info Centre Sataseitti. For this purpose you need high quality binoculars.
Nature is welcoming you at the courtyard of the Hikers’ Info Centre!
