Finnish version of the siteInternational Weekend at the Hiking Trail Reitti
10-11th September, 2005

Camping at Tammen tila organized by the Interseura ry of Pori had attracted 58 participants from thirteen countries. Represented were Finland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Belorussia, France, Turkey, the Netherlands, Spain, China, Belgium, Poland, and Hungary. There were participants of all ages, from baby to grandfather.

One of our activities was mushroom and berry picking along the nature path meanwhile getting acquainted with the Hiking Trail, Reitti, and with the Finnish nature. In addition, paddling on the lake, Joutsijärvi, was offered. While adventuring we even reached the open shed at Hiivaniemi, moreover the tiny island Makkaraluoto. While sailing on these waters, the boat crews could see the huge cross erected on the shore of Silokallio. Paddlers were amazed to see the weekend cottages decorating the shore of Hyytinniemi, and could compare these banks that had been built upon to the reedy-fronted shore of Naarassalo, which is in natural stage.

While the evening was getting dark, the group was gathering to go in the sauna, and the most enthusiastic ones jumped in the refreshingly cool water of Joutsijoki. We carried on spending this evening by barbecuing and by enjoying the puree made of the self-picked mushroom. At this evening, on top of all, our guests were lucky enough to have a clear starry sky and catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis, which can rather rarely be observed at this latitude. For sleeping over we needed all the buildings available at Tammen tila. One company actually spent the night in a tent, out in the woods.

The next day broke, after more or less heavy dreams, chilly and damp. Those who best managed to get over the night were the first to leave for nature, fairly early, indeed - some went for a morning walk, some did paddling. Others started their day in a more relaxed way, by enjoying the autumn day warming up. After the excursions and having spent this pleasant time together we cleaned up the places and said goodbye to the landscapes of Joutsijärvi. Before departing we had a look at the heaps of mushroom picked: abundant quantities of Sheep Polypore ( Albatrellus ovinus ) were picked, furthermore some of the different Gastroboletes as well as some Wooly Milk-Cap mushroom ( Lactarius torminosus ) were found. The yield of berries picked was likewise excellent: great amounts of lingonberry ( Vaccinium vitis-idae ) and a few small buckets of blueberry ( Vaccinium myrtillus) were picked.

On our way home our company recalled and shared the excellent experience of successful excursion. It is most significant from local nature-close tourism point of view that this multinational group managed through guidance to get acquainted with the hiking map of Joutsijärvi and with some hiking trail stages on the southern shore of this lake. Hopefully they will all return here and bring their friends with them, thereby also bringing extra income for local enterprises.
