It is most pleasant to enjoy the peace of Joutsijärvi’s nature on a beautiful summer day.

On Joutsijärvi of Kullaa Paddling

On rowboat often times adventuring,
On Joutsijärvi of Kullaa I enjoyed paddling
Came to reach better nature-understanding
For self-consciousness deepening.

Beneath me a depth of this beautiful lake;
Beyond me the time would chrystal make
Of the moment when the sound of silence reached my ear:
The sound of forest nature which is wilderness-like, here.

Lettujen paistoa

Makkaraluoto means Sausage Reef; there are alternatives to sausage, though

Harmonia

As the autumn evening begins, the landscape turns still. Harmony adheres to the hikers.

Finnish version of the siteOn Joutsijärvi of Kullaa Paddling

Koski of Ulvila, i.e. Kullaa, is famous of Joutsijärvi, the silent lake which is situated on the northern edge of our village, and which, with its beautiful landscapes, attracts visitors from all the regions in Finland, and even from abroad. Summer by summer there are ever more hikers, canoeists, kayakers, and boaters visiting here. In addition to canoes and rowboats, you may also go on these waters by a church boat. In accordance with the primary standards, on these waters you are only allowed to move around by manpower. Any boat mounting an engine is only allowed to be used in exceptional cases, as defined in law.

The rent boats of Hikers’ Info Centre Sataseitti are in the boat harbour of Vasonlahti. At the bay, there are also canoes which can be rented at the Hikers’ Centre, as well. At the tip of the corner of this bay there is a mildly sloped sandbank spot which makes sailing off and landing easy. However, you will easier put your boat on water by the boat slope at the middle of the eastern shore of Vasonniemi.

Boating, canoeing, and kayaking on Joutsijärvi is adventure seeking at its best. You will always find a pleasant landing and pausing spot waiting for you within adequate distance. From Tammi to Fäärkkiluoto or from Vasonlahti to Makkaraluoto, even to Vohla, it is an appropriate row distance, covering which will just serve you a good appetite. On those small islands you can roast sausages or cook coffee on campfire, or you can even stay over night in a tent. Landing is certainly not very easy, since the shores are full of stones. Still, it is worth to land on these islets, as long as you have got the right company and the right equipment as well as abundant sustenance with you.

This lake is rich in islands, which, from safety point of view, is a limiting factor of wind effects. The wind will not find as long open lines, along which it could raise waves, as on the surface of open large lakes. There is no fear of wake waves by ships and powered boats on Joutsjijärvi, either. Nevertheless, the waves, just as the wind, can often be significant, even dangerous, which is worth to consider. As a consequence of sea proximity, the wind speeds may alter quicker than in more continental regions which are further from the sea.

I have also gone paddling on Joutsijärvi, myself, and chose some quite common rowboat. While adventuring, I ranked the opportunities which these islands and campfire places offer in terms of age class applicability.

Fäärkkiluoto

-
Measured from Vasonlahti, this is the closest possible pancake experience
waypoint on any first introductory rowboat trip, arranged for little children

The short row from Vasonlahti to Fäärkkiluoto will certainly appropriately suit you in an introductory sense, if there are also some quite small children in the boats, canoes, and kayaks. As to ensure that the small adventurers’ disciplined behaviour lasts, it is the best to plan a short water route. Meanwhile: the shorter the distance to be covered is, the better the adults can concentrate on the children’s safety. In addition to the boats and canoes offered for rent by Sataseitti, you will also be given life jackets, available also in smaller sizes appropriate for children. So, the safety of youngest age class has also been taken into consideration in connection with their lake nature learning. There is dry fuel wood to be found under waterproof cover on this islet, and the fresh air of this wilderness-like landscape will surely whet your appetite for the food you cook on campfire.

The first island and campfire experience is offered for the smallest members of the family by Fäärkkiluoto at the safest i.e. within the shortest row distance. It is worth to use life jackets, furthermore it is worth to know when planning, that the narrows between the tip of Vasonniemi and the reef Vasonluoto is blocked by lake vegetation every summer, so it is unpleasant to row through there.

Vohla

-
The youngest goat, Vohla… used to graze here. Voilá!

Vohla is with fair precision in the middle of Joutsijärvi, within decent row range from all shoreline sections and from all peninsulas. It is a marvellous, rather small island, north of which there is the curved island of Iso-Nokee, and the western neighbours of which are the reef Kilu as well as the beautiful islet Makkaraluoto, behind it. On Vohla, there is enough room even for several groups to camp in tents without disturbing each other. This pleasantly sized island presumably received its name based on a long gone traditional habit of transferring the young goat stock here for summer pasture. [In Old Finnish, vohla used to mean any of the new born or youngest goats.]

Makkaraluoto

-
Landing perspective from a boat on the waving lake

Makkaraluoto is a half smaller than Vohla. Since its surface area is small, Makkaraluoto offers a unique panorama. There are few undergrowth trees, the forest stand is formed by one stratum. Therefore, you can see the lake all around you even if viewing from the middle of the forest, from the middle of this island. Indeed, you can see the lake better from the trees (: than the forest :), if you hike around along the shoreline of the island. In some ten minutes you can walk around this entire islet. It is a real island experience for example for the youngest among all primary school aged, who need to gain perception of the concept of island. They are, anyhow, old enough already to stay self-disciplined during a fairly long row from the lake shore, and to focus on safety. If the interested and enthusiastic boaters paddle around this mini island, then they may observe, that the structure of the edge of the tree stand is an exemplary – gradually sloped, broadleaf-mixed – landscape shaper zone. At the south west corner of Makkaraluoto you will find a small, reed-edged rocky reef, which means danger to your rowboat, and before all to your oars. All in all, on Makkaraluoto you will find everything, that you have to find on a lake island. With its merits, such as its small area as well as its tree stand structure, Makkaraluoto is a perfect site for educational demonstration.
